Again closing an issue without taking care of the problem. I know the mess will be cleaned up! The reason I sent it to the selectmen is there is a problem that needs to be addressed. A fake camera was placed on a pole hoping to fool illegal dumpers, it didn't work. Put a real camera and start fining people for littering. Look inside the recycling center while you're at it cause the gates are left open all of the time and there are all sorts of things being dumped. We have lazy people who can't close a gate, as well as the Pine St. gate, plus everyone and his brother has a key. I also agree with the other comments. The weather is still nice keep Stevens St open on Saturdays through December.
The only way you can be caught for illegally dumping is if someone turns in your license plate. The neighbors shouldn't have to put up with the mess outside of Stevens St. Pine St use to have dumpsters for leaf dump g any time till that got out of control not only with our residents but out of towers too. Look if anyone has a gripe about the hours down there take it up with the Town Administrator and the Board of Selectmen. Don't pollute the neighborhood because you have leaves to get rid of.
The town will come by your house for selected weeks in the fall and pick up your leaves and yard waste on regular trash days. There is no need to illegally dump. If you can not get your leaves taken care of during this time period, than you should make other arrangements on your own for the cleanup. You do not have the right to dump them anywhere you like and expect someone else to take care of it for you.
Another problem is that people around town pretty sure that when the police do show up for an issue like this, that a citation will not be written. You will certainly get a warning. I would think that if you get out of your car and start illegally dumping, that the 'No Dumping' sign you parked under should be sufficient warning.
It seems to be the same mentality with parking issues around town. Expecially on sidewalks. Cars parked with the bumper up against a no parking sign, get a warning. Really? The no parking sign isn't pretty much a warning not to park there?
For some reason the police's strategy is not to write out tickets for these offenses. this strategy has led to scofflaws all over town for various offenses.
People who pull over in front of the dump, get out of their car, unload trash on the sidewalk and street , must be pretty confident they're not going to be getting a ticket! Considering this has been an ongoing issue for years, and by the size of the trash piles, it's multiple offenders , I doubt if a ticket has ever been issued.
Leo, Problem #1: if the SPD catches someone you are right, no citation would be issued. This town is soooo lenient and everyone knows it. The attitude is why not dump the bags outside the dump, if I get caught nothings going to happen anyway.
This also goes for illegal parking & speeding in this town.
Most of the people who illegally dump trash & leaves outside the gate during off hours are not residents of Stoneham or Town residents who are toooooo lazy to get a Dump Sticker. Also most every surrounding town landscaper knows the routine and has been dumping there for years.
A Camera & Card Access to get through the gate. Eliminate the town employee sitting in his truck watching people dump. Use our Tax money wisely, not the old way.
There has to be a worker there because some people dont pay attetion to what they take and try throwing furniture propane tanks in the leave and brush pile then they are rude when told they cant so imagine what people would put if unstaffed or some might even let out of towners in if its on a card system
You bet your life people would dump anything they could if it was unsupervised. As it is now the gates are left open for contractors and people are in and out of there all day dumping as they please. It does no good to report it cause no one cares.
I would imagine w/o supervision it could get out of control. What do other towns do? There's no dump in Medford. How does Reading control their debris dumping. Never see any complaints on the Reading Patch like you do in Stoneham. 10 years ago a Stoneham landscaper who's no longer around would collect bags from Wakefield residents for $2 each and dump them in Stoneham. He'd collect 100 bags on a Saturday morning. The kid was smart.

The hours should be extended on sat and partial on sunday. Close on a weekday or two when 95% of the residents are working.
It seems that fall leaf pick ups come too early as well. Half of the leafs are still in the trees when the town has done a final pick up.
